According to a report in Gazzetta dello Sport (Nov. 26, 2004), Piaggio official Rocco Sabelli declared that Aprilia considers ending their commitment in MotoGP before the start of the 2005 season. While the test program for the new 2005 Cube has not yet been aborted (the last session took place on Nov. 25th at Jerez de la Frontera), it is likely that Aprilia will pull the plug on their MotoGP program in order to focus on 125, 250 and Superbike in 2005.
Since its debut in Japan in 2002, the RS3 has never won a GP, and never finished on the podium. In 2004, Aprilia took sixth place in the constructors championship with 39 points. Sabelli said that "staying in MotoGP would only cost us money and give off a bad impression. We want to continue investing, but we don't want to throw away our money".
